ARE YOU FROM BUFFALO?
Nope. I was born in Queens. Grew up on Long Island (Merrick), and Hong Kong (long story), then went to college at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
Why not Buffalo? Seriously? That's practically the preface headline in the book. You could argue it's the country's comfort food capital and somehow, all it's known for across the country are its wings, its snow, and four consecutive Super Bowl appearances. Ahem. Moving on.
HOW DID YOU END UP WRITING A BOOK ABOUT BUFFALO'S FOOD SCENE?
Short story? I'd guided national restaurant coverage for The Daily Meal for six years. I'm a huge pizza and wings lover who had always heard about Buffalo's pizza and wings scene and wanted to explore them. I pitched a wing sauce cookbook and when I got to Buffalo to do my research, I quickly realized how much more there was. A cookbook turned into a travel and restaurant guide book and cookbook, which turned into two books: a restaurant guide and a cookbook. The long story involves cheeseballs and my favorite vegetarian.
To do research for the book? I moved to Buffalo for a month, spending two two-week stints there living in different parts of the city.
